Excel to CSV

Drop a spreadsheet and download it as CSV. Pick the sheet and separator, and check the preview first. It runs in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.

.xlsx, .xls, .xlsm, .xlsb and .ods files, up to 50 MB

How it works

Choose a workbook and it is read by a Web Worker in your browser. The file is not uploaded, and you don’t need an account. Pick a sheet, check the preview, then download the CSV. For a workbook with several sheets, Download all sheets as ZIP gives you one CSV per sheet, each named after its sheet.

What goes into the CSV

In your workbookIn the CSV
NumbersAs shown in Excel keeps each cell’s format, such as $1,234.50, 12.5% or a ZIP code with its leading zero. Plain numbers gives 1234.5 and 0.125. Cells with the General format keep up to 15 significant digits either way, as Excel stores them.
Dates and timesISO 8601: 2024-01-15, 2024-01-15 14:30:00, or 14:30:00 for a time on its own. Apps read this the same way whatever the date order in your country.
FormulasThe result Excel saved with the file. The formula itself is not included.
Merged cellsThe value goes in the first cell of the merged area. The other cells are empty.
Hidden rows, columns and sheetsIncluded, as when Excel saves a CSV. Hidden sheets are marked in the sheet list.
Formatting, charts, images and commentsLeft out. A CSV holds only values.

Comma is the standard CSV separator and works in most apps and databases. Pick Semicolon for Excel in countries that use a comma as the decimal mark, such as Germany, France, Spain and Brazil, or when an importer asks for it. Tab gives you a .tsv file, which helps when your values contain many commas. A value that contains the separator, a double quote or a line break is wrapped in double quotes, as RFC 4180 describes, and each row ends with CRLF.

The file is UTF-8, so accented letters, other scripts and emoji come through. Pick UTF-8 with BOM if you will open the CSV in Excel: without the byte order mark, Excel for Windows can show characters such as é as é. Leave it off for databases, code and most import forms, where the BOM can end up in the first column name.

You can convert .xlsx, .xlsm, .xlsb, .xls and .ods files up to 50 MB. Large workbooks take longer on a phone and can run out of memory there; a computer handles more. The preview shows the first 100 rows and 30 columns, and the download has everything. Empty rows and columns at the end of a sheet are trimmed, and every row has the same number of fields.

A password-protected workbook can’t be read, so remove the password in Excel first. If a file can’t be read, it may be damaged, or it may be another format saved with an Excel extension: open it in Excel and save it as .xlsx. Some apps save formulas without their results, and those cells come out empty; open and save the file in Excel to calculate them.
