How to calculate your high school GPA

Turn each grade into points. On the 4.0 scale an A is 4, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F 0. A plus adds 0.3 and a minus takes off 0.3, so a B+ is 3.3 and an A- is 3.7. Percentages become letters first: 93% is an A and 88% a B+.

Add up the points and divide by the number of classes. That's your unweighted GPA. Grades of A, B+, B and A- give 4 + 3.3 + 3 + 3.7 = 14 points, and 14 ÷ 4 = 3.5.

Weighted and unweighted GPA

An unweighted GPA treats every class the same and tops out at 4.0. A weighted GPA gives harder classes extra points, most often 0.5 for honors and 1 for AP, IB and college (dual enrollment) classes, so an A in an AP class counts as 5. In the example above, if the B+ is an honors class and the A- is AP, the weighted GPA is (4 + 3.8 + 3 + 4.7) ÷ 4 = 3.88. An F earns 0 points in any class.

With or without credits

Many high schools count every class the same, so you can calculate your GPA without credits: keep “Count every class the same” selected. If your school gives classes different credits, such as 0.5 for a one-semester class, choose “Use credits”. Each grade's points are then multiplied by the class's credits, and the total is divided by the total credits.

Cumulative GPA across semesters

To combine this term with earlier ones, choose “Yes” under “Add a GPA from earlier terms” and enter your GPA so far and how many classes it covers. Each part counts in proportion to its classes: a 3.0 over 12 classes and a 3.5 over 4 new classes give (3.0 × 12 + 3.5 × 4) ÷ 16 = 3.13.

The percentages follow the common 10-point scale with plus and minus grades. BigFuture, from the College Board, gives the same points for whole letters (A 4.0, B 3.0, C 2.0, D 1.0) and notes that some schools use other cutoffs or no plus and minus grades. Checked September 2026. Your school's handbook has its own scale.

Questions

What is a good high school GPA? It depends on the colleges you're applying to. For comparison, the average US high school graduate in 2019 had a 3.11 GPA, according to the NAEP High School Transcript Study. A 3.0 is a B average and a 3.7 an A- average.

How do I calculate my GPA without credits? Give every class the same weight: turn each grade into points, add them up and divide by the number of classes. The calculator works this way unless you choose “Use credits”.

Can a GPA be higher than 4.0? An unweighted GPA can't go above 4.0, or 4.3 at schools where an A+ is worth 4.3. A weighted GPA can, because honors and AP classes earn extra points: straight A's in AP classes give a 5.0.

Do colleges look at weighted or unweighted GPA? Schools report GPAs in different ways, so colleges often recalculate them. BigFuture notes that colleges may adjust or remove the weighting for AP and honors classes to compare applicants from different schools. It helps to know both numbers.

How do I convert a percentage to a GPA? Find the letter for the percentage in the scale above, then its points: 85% is a B, worth 3.0. To convert a whole report card, choose “Percentages” and type each grade. The calculator shows the letter next to each one.

Do pass/fail classes and PE count? Pass/fail classes usually earn credit but aren't part of the GPA, so choose P (pass/fail) for them. Whether PE, electives and other non-core classes count depends on your school, so check its handbook.

In college? The GPA calculator works out semester and cumulative GPAs by credit hours, and plans your final GPA.
