Double time and bonuses

For hours paid at another rate on top of the overtime above, such as double time.

A bonus you're promised for hours, output or attendance raises your regular rate, so it raises your overtime rate too. A gift or a bonus your employer decides on alone doesn't.

How to calculate overtime pay

Overtime pay = hourly rate × overtime rate × overtime hours. At $20 an hour, time and a half is $20 × 1.5 = $30 an hour, so 10 overtime hours pay $300. Add your regular pay for the total: 40 hours × $20 = $800, plus $300, is $1,100 for the week.

How to calculate your overtime rate per hour

Multiply your regular rate by the overtime multiplier: 1.5 for time and a half, 2 for double time. Under US law the regular rate is your pay for the week, leaving out the overtime premium and payments such as gifts, divided by all the hours you worked. So a shift differential or a promised bonus raises it. A $100 production bonus in a 50-hour week at $20 adds $2, making the regular rate $22 and the overtime rate $33. The Department of Labor explains bonuses.

Overtime on a salary

If you're salaried but not exempt, divide the salary for the week by the hours it's meant to pay for. $52,000 a year is $1,000 a week; for 40 hours that's $25 an hour, so overtime is $37.50 an hour. A monthly salary becomes a weekly one when you multiply it by 12 and divide by 52, as the federal rules do.

Time and a half and double time

Time and a half is 1.5 times your regular rate, the federal minimum for hours over 40 in a workweek. Double time is 2 times. It's required in a few places, such as California for hours over 12 in a day, and some employers pay it on holidays. Enter double-time hours under Double time and bonuses to add them.

US overtime rules

Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, most hourly workers, and salaried workers paid less than $684 a week, must get at least time and a half for every hour over 40 in a workweek. Each week stands alone: hours aren't averaged over two weeks, and federal law doesn't require extra pay for weekends, holidays or long days.

Exempt employees, paid a salary of at least $684 a week for executive, administrative or professional work, aren't owed overtime. The duties decide it, not the job title. See the salary levels.

States can require more. California pays time and a half after 8 hours in a day and double time after 12, and a few other states, such as Alaska and Colorado, also count long days. When state and federal law differ, you get whichever pays more. The Department of Labor's fact sheet covers the federal rules.

Overtime rules by country

The calculator works with any rate. These are the minimums the law sets, checked in October 2026; a contract can pay more.

No tax on overtime

From 2025 to 2028 you can deduct the extra half of time and a half for hours over 40 in a week from your federal taxable income, up to $12,500 a year ($25,000 on a joint return). At $20 an hour, 10 overtime hours pay $300, and $100 of it qualifies. The no tax on overtime calculator estimates your deduction and the federal income tax it saves.

Overtime questions

How much is overtime pay?

In the US it's at least 1.5 times your regular rate for each hour over 40 in a workweek. At $15 an hour that's $22.50 an hour, at $20 it's $30, and at $25 it's $37.50. Some states and employers pay double time, 2 times the rate, for some hours.

How do I calculate overtime pay?

Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5, then by your overtime hours. For 8 overtime hours at $18 an hour: $18 × 1.5 = $27, and $27 × 8 = $216. Add it to your regular pay for the week's total.

Is overtime taxed more?

No. Overtime is taxed at the same rates as the rest of your pay. A bigger paycheck can have more tax withheld, because payroll treats it as if you earned that much every pay period, but any extra is settled when you file your return. From 2025 to 2028, the no tax on overtime deduction can lower the tax on part of it.

Do I get overtime for working over 8 hours a day?

Not under federal law, which counts only hours over 40 in a workweek. California and a few other states pay overtime for long days, and some contracts do too. Enter those hours as overtime in the calculator.

How do I calculate overtime for a month?

Choose A month and enter the month's hours. With a monthly salary, the calculator divides it by the hours it pays for: $4,000 for 160 hours is $25 an hour, so time and a half is $37.50.
