How to calculate a tip
Tip = bill × tip percentage ÷ 100. For a 20% tip on a $48.50 bill, 48.50 × 20 ÷ 100 = $9.70, so you pay $58.20 in all. To split it, divide the total by the number of people: $29.10 each for two.
To work it out in your head, start with 10%: move the decimal point one place to the left, so 10% of $48.50 is $4.85. Double that for 20% ($9.70). For 15%, add half of the 10% again: $4.85 + $2.43 = $7.28.
How to figure out a tip on a phone calculator
The way that works on every calculator is to multiply. For a 20% tip, type the bill, then × 0.2 = to get the tip, or × 1.2 = to get the total with the tip included. For 15% use 0.15 and 1.15; for 18% use 0.18 and 1.18.
The percent key works too, but not the same way on every calculator. On an iPhone, 48.50 + 20 % = gives the total, 58.2, as Apple's Calculator guide describes. Android calculators vary: some work the same way, while others read 20 % as 0.2 and show 48.7. If you're not sure, try 100 + 20 % = once. A calculator that shows 120 adds the tip for you.
Should you tip before or after tax?
The Emily Post Institute suggests tipping on the amount before tax. Choose “The bill before tax”, enter the tax from the receipt, and the tip is worked out on the rest. Tipping on the whole bill is simpler and gives a little more: on a $100 meal with 8% tax, a 20% tip is $20 before tax or $21.60 after.
Splitting the bill and rounding up
Enter the number of people to see what each person pays, tip included. Shares are rounded up to the cent, so together they always cover the bill: $100 split three ways is $33.34 each. To make paying easier, round each share up to $1, $5 or $10. The calculator shows how much rounding adds and what the tip comes to with it.
