How to convert AVIF to WebP

Choose images from your device or drop them onto the converter. You can choose one image, a batch of up to 200 images, or a ZIP containing them. Each image can be up to 50 MB. Press Convert to WEBP, then download the results individually or together in one ZIP. Folders inside your ZIP are kept, and unrelated files are left out with a note. The original images stay on your device. The result has the same base name with the new extension, so you can match it to the original.

What is an .avif file?

AVIF means AV1 Image File Format, from the Alliance for Open Media. It stores photos and graphics in small files, which is why websites use it. Images saved from a browser can therefore end in .avif. The AVIF specification describes the format. Converting changes the format without enlarging the picture or adding detail. Keep the original if you may need its color information or animation later. Animated AVIF becomes a still image of its first frame, with a note. HDR images are saved in standard range; these browser outputs do not preserve the original HDR information. JPG is 8-bit and cannot keep transparency. If your browser cannot decode AVIF, the batch stops with a message asking you to update or change browsers. A damaged file may still fail in a supported browser.

Choosing the quality

Balanced suits most photos: the difference from the original is hard to see and the file stays small. Best quality keeps more fine detail for printing or further editing, and makes larger files. Smallest file makes the smallest files, for email and upload forms with a size limit, with some softening in fine detail.

Transparency and browser support

WebP keeps transparent and semi-transparent areas. It is useful for sites, CMSs and apps that accept WebP but not AVIF. The WebP is often larger than the AVIF, and that is expected. Some browsers cannot save WebP; the converter tells you if yours cannot. Try Chrome, Edge or Firefox in that case. For the other direction, use WebP to JPG or WebP to PNG. For other output formats, use AVIF to JPG (JPEG), AVIF to PNG.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this converter on my phone? Yes. Open this page in a current browser on Windows, Mac, Android or iPhone, choose the files and download the result.

Is this converter free? Yes. No sign-up is needed. Convert up to 200 images per batch, 50 MB each, with no upload and no daily conversion limit.

Can I convert images in bulk? Yes. Choose several files or a ZIP containing them, then download the results together. Each image is converted separately; this does not merge them into one picture.

Are my images uploaded? No. Your browser reads and converts the images on your device, and nothing is sent to a server, so the converter is also safe to use for private photos and screenshots.
