JFIF to PNG

Choose images from your device or drop them onto the converter. You can choose one image, a batch of up to 200 images, or a ZIP containing them. Each image can be up to 50 MB. What is JFIF?

JFIF means JPEG File Interchange Format: the standard layout most JPEG files use. A .jfif file is already a JPEG with a less common extension. Some Windows PCs save JPEG images from the web with this extension. Plain .jpg and .jpeg files work too, useful when a folder contains both spellings.

Editing, orientation and size

PNG is useful for editing without further JPEG loss, or for apps and upload forms that request PNG. It stores the decoded image losslessly from this point on, but cannot restore detail already discarded by the JPEG. Photos usually become larger files. JPEG photos are turned upright using their EXIF orientation, so portrait photos may have their width and height swapped. Converting a photo to PNG does not add transparency to its background.

Downloads and other output formats

Each file is converted separately, so a batch gives you several PNGs rather than one combined picture. A ZIP download is a way to keep those separate files together for email or storage. If two input names would produce the same PNG name, a number is added to avoid overwriting a result. Review the note for files that were skipped or could not be decoded before downloading the batch. Do .jif and .jfi files work? Yes. .jif and .jfi files are JPEGs too, and work the same way. You can also choose .jpe, .jpg and .jpeg files.

Can PNG restore lost JPEG detail? No. PNG keeps the decoded image without adding detail. It cannot recover information already discarded by the source.

Are my images uploaded? No. Your browser reads and converts the images on your device, and nothing is sent to a server, so the converter is also safe to use for private photos and screenshots.
